HISTORY

The first Camp Discovery was sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS) in 1984 and was held at YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow in Hunt, Texas with approximately 50 campers.  As our number of campers grew to our current number of around 150 campers, we changed locations first to Hermann Sons Camp in Comfort, Texas, then Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas and are currently being hosted by Morgan’s Wonderland Camp in San Antonio. Camp Discovery was formerly sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), but in 2013, the ACS announced that it was no longer sponsoring pediatric oncology camps nationwide. As a result of this decision, the ACS graciously offered VisionWorks the opportunity to place camp under our umbrella, and we enthusiastically accepted.

Since 2013, we have greatly increased our programming to include family camps, bereavement camps, hospital camps, and other programs for children and families facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

Over the past few years, we have discovered that the name “VisionWorks” did not truly capture the overall mission and vision of our programs. To pay homage to our flagship program, Camp Discovery, we changed our name to Discovery Camps in 2022. Going forward, Discovery Camps will be the umbrella which covers the entirety of the many camping programs we provide. We cannot wait to continue creating forever experiences for our campers for years to come!
